THE METROPOLITAN OPERA
The Metropolitan Opera, or the MET as people more popularly know it, is the home of some of the most creative and talented artists in the music industry and is the most well known opera company in the world. Whether it is singers, conductors, composers, musicians, and stage and theatrical directors, it is the hub and centre of the music industry in the US and one of the biggest worldwide. The Met is known for having produced some of the best voices in music. Directed by James Levine since 1976, the Met has continued to keep up its reputation and indeed continued to elevate its standards ever since it came into being. The Metropolitan Opera Grand Orchestra is generally considered to be the finest in the world.
The Metropolitan Opera is over a century old, having been founded in 1883 and was initially built on Broadway and 39th. However, the Metropolitan Opera didn’t have sufficient space and facilities, and with the help of the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Opera was shifted to the Lincoln Centre in 1966 where it had the most modern of facilities available. Christine Nilsson, Marcella Sembrich, Lilli Lehmann, Nellie Melba, Emma Calvé, Emma Eames, Lillian Nordica and Enrico Caruso are just some of the few early musical greats who have performed in the Metropolitan Opera.
The Metropolitan Opera has always continued to pursue change and adapt to new technology, innovation and creativity in order to reach more and more people locally and internationally. In that regard, the Metropolitan Opera has launched the “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD,” first simulcasts and now broadcasts – live, as well as to movie theatres. Besides that it now hosts Open Houses for the general public. Apart from that, the Metropolitan Opera guild and young artists program also holds Metropolitan Opera national council auditions for new and upcoming artists.
The Mer holds some of the best renditions of the most popular operas like the Metropolitan Opera Hansel and Gretel (which was actually the very first complete opera broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera back in 1931), Macbeth, Faust, An American Tragedy, The Ghosts of Versailles and more recently The First Emperor in 2006. Since 1976 over 37 more operas have premiered at the Metropolitan Opera.
