Never before had anyone seen a chimney sweep as happy or as lucky as Bert, in the 1964 Academy Award winning Walt Disney film Mary Poppins, jumping and prancing without a care in the world and as he himself rightly sang “as lucky as lucky can be”! The nanny in the film and the protagonist of the story, Mary Poppins is one of the most lovable and unforgettable characters in the Walt Disney ensemble of characters to date. A perfect nanny in her own words, Mary Poppins was indeed someone to remember. And now with a Mary Poppins musical, she will never be forgotten. It is based on a series of children’s books by Pamela L. Travers and the Walt Disney, the story is a fusion of both and even includes some parts that were not included in the film.
Mary Poppins the musical follows the story of the Banks family who lives on Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Mr and Mrs Banks are having difficulty raising their children as they would like and their two naughty young children infuriate all their nannies to the point who all eventually leave. However The Mary Poppins comes to their rescue as the “perfect nanny” and step by step teaches the children the values of life through her rather unconventional methods. Along their fun-filled adventures with Mary Poppins, they meet Bert, who is a ragged dusty sooty chimney sweep, but they learn to look past appearances and get to know that Bert is actually a very friendly very kind-hearted soul who works hard to earn his keep. The Mary Poppins musical lyrics and soundtrack are all the same and many of the same Mary Poppins songs that were sung in the movie are sung in the theatrical.
Mary Poppins the musical stage play production opened in 2004 and was well-received by all audiences. Mary Poppins Broadway opened in November 2006 with a few minor changes from the original West End production. Mary Poppins the musical has also won two Oliver awards for the Best Actress in a Musical and the other for Best Theatre Choreography. The Mary Poppins UK tour began in June 2008 and will end 2009. Some of the locations where the Mary Poppins tour will stop are at the Edinburgh Playhouse, Theatre Royal, Plymouth, Birmingham Hippodrome and the Palace Theatre in Manchester. There is also a US tour announced for 2009.
