Billy Elliot is set in County Durham around 1984-85 at the time of the coal miner’s strike. Billy is a motherless boy and is surrounded only by his father and brothers who are on strike and clash constantly with riot police. Because of this influence he is constantly pushed towards more masculine activities such as boxing, football and the coal mining business. However, Billy happens to run into a Ballet class by accident, which is run by Mrs. Wilkinson. Even though only girls have taken the class so far, Billy can’t keep himself away from the grace and beauty of this dance form and longs desperately to be part of it. Luck is on Billy’s side and he is accepted as part of the class, even becoming friends with Mrs. Wilkinson’s daughter Debbie. Mrs. Wilkinson is impressed with Billy’s talent and continues to tutor him privately even after a warning from Billy’s father, and trains him to a level far beyond that of the rest of the class. The show went into production in Australia in 2007 due to its immense popularity. Billy Elliot Sydney opened in November 2007 from where it went on to win the Best Musical Production. Production closed in Sydney in November 2008. Then it shifted to Melbourne and Billy Elliot Melbourne opened on 13th December 2008. Billy Elliot Broadway production went into performance on October 1st 2008. There is also a production planned for Seoul, Korea in 2010 and auditioning is underway.
